Terms of Use

The plain-language deal for using myBackyard. No legalese walls — just what we expect from you and what you can expect from us.

Last updated: August 14, 2026

What myBackyard is

myBackyard is a small community app for St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador — a place to share independent local spots, ask your neighbours questions, and organize events. It's built and operated by its owner, Scott, under the Bonsai brand. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to these terms.

Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old to have an account. If you're under 13, you can't use myBackyard — no exceptions.

Your account is yours: keep your password to yourself, and you're responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has gotten into it, change your password and let us know.

Your content

Everything you post — posts, comments, photos, events — stays yours. You own it. By posting, you give myBackyard permission to store it and display it to other people in the app, which is the whole point of posting. That's the only license you're granting; we don't sell your content or use it for advertising.

Only post things you have the right to share. Don't post other people's photos or writing as your own.

Zero tolerance for objectionable content

myBackyard has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. This includes, without limitation:

  • Harassment, bullying, or targeting other users
  • Hate speech or discrimination of any kind
  • Any sexual content involving minors — this is reported to authorities, full stop
  • Threats of violence or encouraging harm
  • Spam, scams, and deceptive content

Offending content is removed and offending accounts are banned. Every report is reviewed and acted on within 24 hours — the content is either removed and the user ejected, or the report is resolved. You can report any post or comment from its ⋯ menu, and block any user so you never see them again. See the Community Guidelines for the fuller picture of how we expect neighbours to treat each other.

Termination, disclaimers, and the law

We can suspend or terminate accounts that break these terms — immediately, and without notice for the zero-tolerance items above. You can leave any time by deleting your account in Settings → Account, which permanently removes your content.

myBackyard is provided "as is". It's a small community project, not a commercial service with an SLA — we do our best to keep it running and your data safe, but we can't promise it will always be available or error-free, and we're not liable for losses arising from using it, to the maximum extent the law allows.

These terms are governed by the laws of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. If we make meaningful changes to these terms, we'll update the date at the top and note it in the app.
